The girl was found bleeding and unconscious in the toilets of the Karatepe refugee camp last night. In Karatepe thousands of refugees live in dire conditions.
It was sprung up in great haste after neighboring Moria was largely burned out in September. According to the Greek channel ERT, the Public Prosecution Service has started the investigation after an initial medical investigation indicates rape.
Human rights organizations have been warning for some time about the harsh conditions in the tent camp, especially now that winter is coming.
“This shows in a terrible way how bad the facilities in the new camp are, why the current measures are insufficient and why there is an enormous need for a safe and dignified shelter for the most vulnerable people,” said Stephan Oberreit, the country coordinator Greece of Doctors Without Borders, know RTL News.
” We have seen these kinds of incidents happen in Moria for years. The policy of locking people up in these kinds of degrading circumstances makes them vulnerable. How long should this go on? The most vulnerable people must be taken to safe shelter before more disasters like this happen. ”
The reception of underage children from the Greek refugee camps is a tricky issue for the Netherlands in the coalition. Unlike other European countries, the cabinet does not want to take in children.
It is, however, working on the shelter for minors on the Greek mainland.
