Yavar Soltani was arrested and transferred to Maku Prison to serve his sentence.

Yavar Soltani, a Turkish (Azerbaijani) activist from Maku, was arrested on Monday, December 7, and transferred to Maku Prison to serve his sentence. Mr. Soltani was previously sentenced to 1 year in prison by the Maku Criminal Court in the first instance. On appeal, 8 months of this sentence was suspended for 2 years.
According to HRANA News Agency, the news agency of the Human Rights Activists in Iran, on Monday, December 8, 2020, Yavar Soltani, a Turkish (Azerbaijani) activist from Maku, was arrested and transferred to Maku Prison to serve his sentence.
Mr. Soltani was arrested by the IRGC intelligence agents in Maku on July 13, 2020, and transferred to the prison in the city. It is said that he was a critic of the installation of a statue in the main square of Maku. He was finally released from Maku prison on July 14 after posting a 50 million toman bail.
Mr. Soltani was previously sentenced to 1 year in prison by Branch 101 of the Criminal Court of Mako 2, presided over by Judge Erfan Alamdari, on charges of “disturbing public opinion and calling for the disruption of public order.” On appeal, Branch 13 of the West Azerbaijan Province Court of Appeal suspended 8 months of this sentence for 2 years.
Yavar Soltani is a graduate of Mechanical Engineering from Urmia University and a student of Civil Engineering at Maku Azad University.
Mr. Soltani has a history of arrest and conviction. He was previously arrested on November 19, 2015, during a football match between Tractor Tabriz and Siah Jamegan after protesting the Fitileh program and was eventually released on bail. Mr. Soltani was later sentenced by Branch 112 of the Criminal Court of the Second Judicial District of Tabriz, headed by Judge Mohammad Ali Piri, to a fine of five million rials instead of imprisonment and a fine of three million rials instead of flogging, on the charge of “participating in disturbing public order and peace by creating commotion and commotion.”
