The US sanctions Mohammad Javad Zarif

The US Treasury Department has placed Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on its sanctions list, saying he is the most important spokesman for Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and promotes the Iranian regime.

The US Treasury Department on Wednesday, July 31, placed Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on its sanctions list. The department argued that Zarif was acting in the name of the Islamic Republic's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The US government had recently imposed sanctions on Ali Khamenei and his assets and institutions.

US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has said that "Javad Zarif is a tireless executor of the directives of the Leader of the Islamic Republic and is the regime's most important spokesman on the global stage."

US officials had previously said that it was highly likely that Mohammad Javad Zarif would be placed on the US sanctions list.

Subtle reaction

In response to the news of his sanctions, the Islamic Republic's Foreign Minister tweeted that the sanctions have no effect on him and his family, as they have no assets abroad.
