Charges of "corruption on earth" and death penalty approved in acid attack punishment plan

While acid attack victims are "demanding an end to the cycle of violence," the additional note on the charge of "corruption on earth" in the bill to increase the punishment for acid attack, which means the "death penalty," was approved by members of parliament.

On Sunday, June 10, during a public session during which the members of the Islamic Consultative Assembly reviewed the details of the plan to increase the punishment for acid throwing, they approved an additional note to Article 1 of the plan, which, according to ISNA, states that "acid throwing is intended to intimidate and create insecurity in society in a way that causes insecurity in society; the act is considered a crime of corruption on earth and is punishable by punishment."

The approval of the death penalty in this plan comes at a time when acid attack victims have said that they do not want the death penalty.

Earlier, Marzieh Ebrahimi, one of the victims of the acid attack in Isfahan, said that they wanted to "stop the cycle of violence," not execution.

However, MP Fatemeh Hosseini had announced retaliation for the death penalty in the case of acid attack.

However, today, the parliamentarians approved the addition of this clause to the bill with 161 votes in favor, 9 against, and 9 abstentions out of a total of 245 members present. The bill will become law after approval by the Guardian Council.

According to the Islamic Penal Code, the most severe punishment for the charge of corruption on earth is death.

The approval of the death penalty for acid throwing comes at a time when one-third of the world's executions take place in Iran, and according to a report by Amnesty International, a total of 253 executions were carried out in Iran last year, which is more than one-third of all recorded executions in the world.
