Nobel Peace Prize awarded to civil activist Narges Mohammadi

This year's Nobel Peace Prize (2023) was awarded to Narges Mohammadi, a human rights activist and prisoner in Iran.

The Nobel Peace Prize is one of the five Nobel Prizes, first awarded by Alfred Nobel in 1901. In his will, he stated that the prize should be awarded to the person who shall have done the best or greatest work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of armies, or for the holding and promotion of peace conferences. The prize is awarded annually in Oslo, the capital of Norway.

Narges Mohammadi, a women's rights activist who is serving her sentence in Evin Prison, is working for human rights and democracy even from inside prison. The Nobel Peace Prize Selection Committee announced the name of Narges Mohammadi as the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate this morning, October 6, at the committee meeting in Oslo, the capital of Norway, and awarded the prize to this civil activist with the slogan "Woman, Life, Freedom."

Britris Andersson, head of the Norwegian delegation to the Nobel Peace Committee in Oslo, said: "This prize is awarded to Narges Mohammadi for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran, her fight to promote human rights and achieve freedom for all."

It should be noted that Shirin Ebadi, a lawyer, former court judge, author, and lecturer, also won the Nobel Peace Prize 20 years ago, and Narges Mohammadi is the second Iranian woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
