The impact of floods on the increase in sugar prices in Iran

The price of sugar in Iran has been increasing and in some places has exceeded 10,000 Tomans per kilogram. Will the price of sugar fall?

Sugar prices fluctuated and increased towards the end of last year. At that time, some officials announced that the sugarcane harvest had begun in Khuzestan Province and that the price would soon drop in the market as the sugar from these sugarcanes became available.

But this did not happen, and the price of this essential commodity in Iran not only did not decrease, but in recent weeks it has increased even more than before, and in some places it has even exceeded 10,000 Tomans.

Mehr News Agency spoke to Bahman Danaei, secretary of the Iranian Sugar Industry Association, about this. Danaei, while promising to import 1.4 million tons of sugar and start the autumn beet harvest, predicted that the price of sugar will decrease within the next month.

Impact of recent floods

The Mehr report continues by stating that recent floods have submerged between 30,000 and 35,000 hectares of Khuzestan's sugarcane fields and two of the province's nine sugarcane factories.

In response to a question about this year's production, Danaei said: "It is somewhat difficult to predict the production rate for this year because the rainfall has been very high, especially in Khuzestan Province, and cultivation has been delayed."

He pointed out that 70,000 to 80,000 hectares of sugar beet had been cultivated by the end of April last year and said: "This has not happened yet this year, so it will be possible to predict the production level in late April."

According to Danaei, six ships are currently docked at Chabahar, Khomeini, and Abbas ports and are unloading sugar cargoes. This means that between 800,000 and 900,000 tons of sugar imported with government currency should be available to the public within the next month.

Iran's annual need for sugar has been announced at around two million 200 thousand tons.
