Supreme Court confirms death sentence for eight accused of attacking parliament and Khomeini's mausoleum

Simultaneously with the Ministry of Intelligence's announcement about the arrest of 27 members of a "terrorist group", the head of Tehran's Revolutionary Courts announced that the death sentences of eight defendants accused of attacking the parliament and the mausoleum of Ayatollah Khomeini have been confirmed by the Supreme Court.

According to Tasnim News Agency, Musa Ghazanfarabadi said on Monday, June 11, that these individuals had been sentenced to death by Branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court on charges of "assisting in rebellion (armed rebellion against the Islamic ruler)."

He also said that the verdict of these individuals "is final and will be implemented soon."

According to the report, the case of these attacks has 26 defendants, with the trial of the remaining 18 defendants set to take place in the coming months.

The Mizan News Agency, affiliated with the judiciary, had previously reported that all the defendants present in this court were arrested between June 7 and July 2, 2017.

In the attack on the Iranian parliament and the mausoleum of Ayatollah Khomeini on June 8, 2017, five attackers were killed. The Ministry of Intelligence, without mentioning their last names, announced their names as Ramin, Qayyum, Fereydoun, Abu Jihad, and Serias.

Iranian security sources also reported the arrest of an Iranian woman who, they said, played the role of "guiding" the perpetrators of the attack on the mausoleum of Ayatollah Khomeini.

After that, security officials did not comment on the name or condition of this person.

Following this attack, Iranian security and judicial authorities announced the arrest of dozens of people suspected of having ties to the Islamic State group, ISIS, in various regions of Iran.

In recent years, the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence has announced, without providing details, the arrest of several groups that the ministry says are "affiliated" with the ISIS group.

The ministry also announced in a statement on Monday that 27 members of a "terrorist network" who planned to carry out "terrorist operations in Tehran and several important cities" on "the Nights of Power and Quds Day" were arrested.

According to the aforementioned announcement, these individuals had also "threatened the Iranian people with revenge and murder by publishing images in cyberspace."

The ministry announced the discovery and seizure of "large amounts of weapons and ammunition, including several Kalashnikovs, Colts, combat grenades, bombs, and explosives-making equipment" from the suspects.

The Ministry of Intelligence has not provided details about the identities of these individuals.
