Financial sanctions and travel bans on 5 Iranian citizens by the Australian government

On the second anniversary of the murder of Mahsa Amini, the Australian government issued financial sanctions and a travel ban against five Iranian citizens.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wang announced targeted financial sanctions and a travel ban against five Iranian citizens on Monday, September 16.
Penny Wang released a statement on the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs website, announcing: “On the second anniversary of the imprisonment and tragic death of Mahsa “Zina” Amini, the Australian Government has imposed targeted financial sanctions and travel bans on five Iranian nationals. Those sanctioned today include senior security and military officials who were complicit in the violent suppression of protests in Iran.”
The statement, issued by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs, said: “The human rights situation in Iran, particularly for women and girls, remains dire. In early 2024, Iranian authorities launched a new campaign to enforce mandatory hijab laws through increased surveillance and harassment. Women human rights activists continue to be detained and sentenced to death. These sanctions demonstrate the government’s commitment to holding Iran accountable for human rights abuses and other destabilizing activities. Australia stands with Iranian women and girls in their fight for equality and empowerment.”
