Even domestic statistics say that Iran suffered from an economic recession last year more than expected.

Iran says its economy suffered its worst recession last year, exceeding international organizations' forecasts. The United States reimposed sanctions on Iran's oil and financial sectors last year.
The Statistical Center of Iran said in a report released on Sunday that Iran's gross domestic product shrank by about 4.9 percent in 2018.
The World Bank reported earlier this month that Iran's gross domestic product shrank by about 1.9 percent in 2018, after growing by 3.8 percent in 2017.
The International Monetary Fund said in a report in April that Iran's gross domestic product shrank by about 3.9 percent in 2018.
The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund have estimated that Iran's economic recession this year will be minus 4.5 percent and minus 6 percent.
