North and South Korean leaders meet, borders broken

For the first time since the end of the Korean Peninsula war, a North Korean leader has set foot on South Korean soil. The North Korean leader crossed the border for the first time. The meeting between the leaders of the two Koreas is a historic event.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un crossed the inter-Korean border on foot at Panmunjom and met with South Korean President Moon Jae-in.
Mr. Moon welcomed Mr. Kim at the border. The two leaders then walked hand in hand into North Korean territory for a few steps before moving on to South Korean territory.
The event was broadcast live on television channels. Images of this historic event were immediately broadcast to the most distant parts of the world.
The North Korean leader was accompanied by his sister and five senior North Korean officials. In addition, the military chiefs of the two countries are also among the visitors.
The meeting place is the “Peace House,” located in the demilitarized zone between the two countries. The leaders of the two countries are discussing improving relations between the two countries and establishing a lasting peace for the two divided countries on the Korean Peninsula.
The South Korean leader will try to convince Kim Jong Un to abandon his nuclear program. At the end of the meeting, a joint statement will be signed by the leaders of the two Koreas. The North Korean leader has promised to speak frankly with the South Korean president about domestic Korean issues.
Three meetings between the leaders of the two Koreas
It is worth noting that after the end of the Korean War (1950-1953), a ceasefire was officially established, but both countries were in a state of war. This is the third time in the past 65 years that the leaders of the two Koreas have met.
The first meeting took place in June 2000 and the second in October 2007 in Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea.
Preparations for the inter-Korean summit began in early 2018. The Winter Olympics in February 2018 brought the two countries closer together, turning the two enemies into friends.
Kim Jong-un's next meeting with Trump
US President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un are scheduled to meet in June 2018. The current meeting between the leaders of the two Koreas will also pave the way for this meeting.
Relations between North and South Korea have been severed for years.
North Korea had prevented any dialogue with its nuclear tests.
Since US President Donald Trump came to power, concerns about a full-scale war in the region have also increased.
The US-North Korea conflict over North Korea's weapons program escalated in 2017. The two countries threatened war, and the North Korean military, in addition to missile tests, tested a nuclear bomb in September, in clear violation of several United Nations resolutions.
Now, after Kim's meeting with Moon, the next meeting between Kim and Trump will be held in the next two months.
