Floods in Sistan and Baluchestan Province “took away lives”

Many houses have been destroyed in the flooded areas of Sistan and Baluchestan province. In Zarabad, Baluchestan, which supplied most of the country's bananas, 1,000 hectares of banana orchards have been completely destroyed. How is relief aid being provided?

The situation in Sistan and Baluchestan province has not yet returned to normal after the floods. A local aid worker told DW that people managed to save their lives, but homes and farmland were destroyed and livestock were destroyed. The fate of some villages is still unknown. In some flooded areas of Sistan and Baluchestan province, officials said 80 percent of rural infrastructure had been destroyed.

One of the people involved in the Darul Uloom school in Zahedan also reported in an interview with Deutsche Welle: "The flood has stopped, but there are areas that are difficult to cross and no relief has been provided to them. This is because the flood has cut off the communication routes to these villages. These are remote areas and no one has been able to get news of them and help them. Relief is still ongoing."

He continued: "The flood has taken away life. People around the rivers had farms that the flood has taken away. The Dashtiari region, which is a fertile agricultural region and produces crops almost every four seasons and its products, from bananas to watermelons, are sent to the entire country, is now completely destroyed. In the Qasr-e-Ghand region, the flood has also destroyed agricultural lands."

Mawlawi Abdul Hamid's call for help for flood victims

Maulana Abdul Hamid, the Sunni Friday prayer imam of Zahedan, immediately called for people to help the flood victims after the flood. According to a person involved in Darul Uloom, people from all over the country brought first aid and essential items such as food, blankets, and clothing to the flood victims.

The “Mohsinin” organization, which operates under the supervision of Maulana Abdul Hamid, the Sunni Friday prayer leader of Zahedan, has played an important role in providing assistance to the flood victims. Abdul Hamid asked people to send aid to the flood victims through this organization as well. People from all over the country have donated cash and non-cash donations to this organization.

According to one of the Darul Uloom workers, the Mohsenin Institute has so far managed to send 28 relief shipments to the flooded areas. Each shipment consisted of several aid trucks. He told DW that the institute sends several shipments to the flooded areas every day and has so far managed to establish three main camps in the flooded areas in Dashtiari, Zarabad and Bent.

A local aid worker told DW that there is still no news about the fate of remote villages whose communication routes have been cut off. He emphasized: "General assistance from people, regardless of ethnicity or religion, is still ongoing. Even aid from Zoroastrian brothers from Yazd has reached us. Even young people from Tehran, Mashhad, and Shiraz came to the flooded area in their own cars and helped."

He emphasized that public assistance has been good, but the flood-affected people are more waiting for basic and infrastructural assistance from the government.
