US Secretary of State: Iran has complied with the JCPOA

Rex Tillerson has told the US House of Representatives that Iran has fulfilled its obligations under the JCPOA. At the same time, Donald Trump has called for a review of whether lifting sanctions on Iran is in the US national interest.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has announced in a letter to US House Speaker Paul Ryan that Iran has fulfilled its commitments under the nuclear deal by April 18 and that sanctions relief will remain in place. Tillerson also said in the letter that Iran continues to be a “major state sponsor of terrorism” using various means and methods.

He also said that the National Security Council, at Trump's order, has been tasked with advancing the review of the JCPOA to clarify whether the suspension of sanctions on Iran is vital to ensuring America's national security interests.

The latest report from the Iranian Foreign Ministry, published earlier this week, states that the sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic due to its nuclear activities were related to "the oil and gas sector, the transportation sector, and the banking and finance sector, and sub-sectors including water and electricity, industry and trade, healthcare, agriculture, and..." and that "the majority" of them have been lifted.

However, sanctions imposed on Iran due to its deteriorating human rights record have increased in the past week and, according to US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, will be tightened in the future.
