British Foreign Secretary: Iran should return to JCPOA negotiations as soon as possible

In the first meeting between the Iranian and British foreign ministers, British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss called for Iran to return quickly to the JCPOA. On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Amir Abdollahian also met with the Irish Foreign Minister.

On Wednesday evening, a British government spokesman announced that Foreign Secretary Liz Truss met with Iranian Foreign Minister Amir Abdollahian on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

According to Reuters, in this conversation, Liz Truss called for Iran to return to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) negotiating table in Vienna as soon as possible. She emphasized that the goal is to fulfill the provisions of the JCPOA by all parties and reduce tension over Iran's nuclear program.

According to a British government spokesman, the foreign ministers of the two countries also discussed bilateral relations and regional issues during the meeting.

“Very clear determination”

After a similar meeting with his Iranian counterpart, Ireland's Foreign Minister also spoke of his "very clear determination" to return to nuclear talks.

Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney told reporters after the meeting: "It may not happen in the next few weeks, because the new government in Tehran has not yet made a final decision on its approach to the negotiations. But he (Amir-Abdollahian) certainly has a very clear determination to return to the negotiating table."

Ireland is currently a member of the UN Security Council and coordinates the fifteen-member working group that is tasked with addressing issues related to the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran, Britain, China, France and Germany.
