Coronavirus in Iran: The number of victims has increased explosively in the past 24 hours

The official number of coronavirus victims in Iran reached a record 415 in one day, which is an explosive jump compared to the official figure of 346 people yesterday.

The spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Health, which announces official figures on coronavirus infections and deaths daily, announced on Wednesday, November 27, that 415 more people had fallen victim to the disease in the past 24 hours, bringing the official total number of victims to 33,714.

Sima Sadat Lari also announced the identification of 6,824 new patients during this period, saying that the total number of infected people in Iran has reached 588,648.

Announcing that 27 provinces are still in red status, he said that more than five thousand patients with coronavirus are "under intensive care in severe condition."

Official statistics announced by the Ministry of Health have always been subject to doubt and ambiguity.

In the latest statement, Hossein Qeshlaqi, a member of the Supreme Council of the Medical System, said that the coronavirus statistics in Iran are "underreported" and that the number of coronavirus victims in Iran is three to four times the official figures announced by the Ministry of Health.

In this regard, Reza Karami Mohammadi, head of the Tehran Crisis Management Organization, also stated that the ratio of coronavirus deaths to infected people in Iran is higher compared to other countries, and said that more than half of the daily coronavirus deaths are related to Tehran alone.

In recent weeks, the number of coronavirus infections has increased in a large number of countries, especially in Europe, but the death to infection ratio in Iran is higher than the average in other countries.

Mr. Karami Mohammadi also compared the number of victims of Corona and those killed in the Iran-Iraq war and said: "We lost 33,000 people due to Corona in eight months, while during the imposed war, about 30,000 of our fighters and compatriots were martyred annually."

The head of Tehran's crisis headquarters has also emphasized that "not taking this disease seriously will soon turn it into an international disaster."

Establishing quarantine regulations in countries that have faced an increase in the spread of the virus is one of the solutions to combat this virus, which has also been announced in Iran in the form of imposing some restrictions in 43 cities, but the implementation of these regulations has also been incomplete and has not led to a reduction in the spread so far.

The government's inability to support businesses that need to be closed and the public's failure to comply with regulations, especially the holding of some government-organized gatherings, are cited as factors in the failure of policies to combat the coronavirus.

In the most recent event that made headlines, a religious ceremony known as the "People's Celebration of Eid al-Bay'at" was held on November 25th, with thousands of people attending at Mashhad's Imam Reza Stadium.

After the ceremony, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Health referred to it as a "real crime," and the president of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences said that the religious celebration of several thousand people in Mashhad, at the same time as the widespread outbreak of the coronavirus, was a "sick production factory."

This is while Iran's healthcare system has become worn out and vulnerable, and according to the spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, about 25% of Iranian nurses have been infected with the coronavirus so far, and 694 hospitals in the country are struggling with the coronavirus outbreak.

According to published official reports, 26,969 regular hospital beds and 5,900 special beds have been occupied by patients infected with the coronavirus so far.

According to the announcement of the Iranian Ministry of Health, the current status of the provinces of Tehran, Isfahan, Qom, East Azerbaijan, South Khorasan, Semnan, Qazvin, Lorestan, Ardabil, Khuzestan, Kermanshah, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer Ahmad, Gilan, Bushehr, Zanjan, Ilam, Khorasan Razavi, Mazandaran, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, Alborz, West Azerbaijan, Markazi, Kerman, North Khorasan, Hamedan, Yazd and Kurdistan is red.

The provinces of Hormozgan, Fars, Golestan, and Sistan and Baluchestan are also in orange and yellow status.
