In mid-August 2019, a letter signed by 14 civil activists calling for Ayatollah Khamenei’s resignation was published. With the publication of this letter, a number of signatories were arrested and some were pressured. Following this letter, another letter with similar content was published under the title “14 Female Civil Activists.” Giti Pourfazel is one of the signatories of the statement by 14 female civil activists calling for Ayatollah Khamenei’s resignation.

Giti Pourfazel was arrested by security forces on August 19, 2019 in this connection and after more than a month, she was transferred to the women's ward of Evin Prison upon completion of the interrogation process. Ms. Pourfazel was finally released from Evin Prison on November 12, 2019, after posting a bail of 500 million Tomans, temporarily until the end of the trial.

This civil activist was later tried by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Iman Afshari, and sentenced to 3 years and 6 months in prison on charges of gathering and collusion with the intention of committing a crime against national security, and to 8 months in prison on charges of propaganda against the system, for a total of 4 years and 2 months of penal servitude and 2 years of disqualification from membership in political groups and organizations. This revocation of the license continued until 1997, and in that year, after the Bar Association elections and the handling of his case, his law license was returned to him.

Ms. Pourfazel was previously arrested in November 2014 during a rally protesting acid attacks and then released.
