Iran's Environmental Protection Unit: Cigarette butts have repeatedly caused rangeland fires

Jamshid Mohabbatkhani, commander of Iran's Environmental Protection Unit, says that the organization's investigations show that throwing cigarette butts out of cars while traveling "has repeatedly caused fires in pastures."

In an interview with ISNA News Agency, Mr. Mohabbatkhani reminded that in addition to the risk of fire, cigarette butts or cigarette filters cause water pollution.

According to the commander of the Environmental Protection Unit, each cigarette filter can poison and contaminate 500 liters of water, and this definitely affects biodiversity.

In another part of his interview with ISNA, Jamshid Mohabbatkhani emphasized that the most fires last year occurred during the Nowruz holidays and that "the provinces of Mazandaran, Gilan, and Golestan had the highest number of fires, respectively."
