Images of the meeting between the Minister of Oil and senior military officials of the Islamic Republic and the Russian ambassador provoked reactions.

Images of the meeting between Iranian Oil Minister Javad Oji and a number of IRGC and Islamic Republic Army officers with the Russian ambassador to Tehran sparked reactions from social media users.

These images, published by the official news agency of the Islamic Republic of Iran, IRNA, on Tuesday, June 7, are from the Russian National Day ceremony held at the country's embassy.

In one of these images, the Islamic Republic's military is lined up to shake hands with Levan Dzhagarian, the Russian ambassador to Iran, and congratulate him on Russia's National Day.

In another image, the Iranian oil minister, standing next to the Russian ambassador, reads a written message.

Many users criticized the presence of the Iranian oil minister and military personnel at the Russian embassy, calling it "humiliating."

Twitter user Sahand Iranmehr reposted a photo of the Iranian Oil Minister and the Russian ambassador, writing that "the body language of the Iranian Oil Minister and the Russian ambassador at the country's embassy in Tehran is truly disgusting and shameful."

He says, "This photo is one of those photos whose bitterness remains in the taste and mind for years."

Another user wrote that "the Islamic Republic no longer hesitates to publicly display its status as a Russian colony" and "the military of a country only visits the ambassador of the occupying country if it is under occupation."

Another Twitter user, "Second-Class Citizen," expressed the opinion that "no country has hurt us as much as Russia."

A user named "Diako" described the meeting between the Islamic Republic's military and the Russian ambassador as "a meeting between a commander and his soldiers."

Abdullah Ramezanzadeh, a university professor and spokesman for the government of Mohammad Khatami, also wrote: "Look at the picture, the great ambassador!! How arrogant Russia is standing!"

Some social media users have used the phrase "Salam Farmand" for this meeting, referring to the "Salam Farmand" ceremony at Azadi Stadium to honor Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Republic.

Another user named "Cheshme Abi" wrote, referring to the line of Islamic Republic soldiers to shake hands with Levan Jagaryan, whom he called the "low-level" Russian ambassador, that "no regime like the Islamic Republic was capable of humiliating Iran and Iranians to this extent."

The fundamentalists have not reacted to this meeting, while they strongly opposed it when Mohammad Javad Zarif, the Foreign Minister of the Rouhani government, met with his American counterpart John Kerry and walked together during the negotiations for the nuclear agreement.

The Russian ambassador's meeting with the Iranian military comes a few weeks after a Moscow-based newspaper quoted Mr. Jagarian as saying that "the mandatory hijab and the ban on alcoholic beverages" in Iran are two major obstacles for Russian citizens to travel to the country.

In the past, some of the actions of the Russian ambassador to Iran, including the publication of images of his tribute to the monument to Alexander Griboyedov, the initiator of the Treaty of Turkmenchay, as well as his criticism of Persian-language media abroad, including Radio Farda, had been controversial.

In another example, in August 2013, the publication of a joint photo of the Russian and British ambassadors to commemorate the Tehran Conference in 1943 sparked widespread reactions in Iran, including among current and former officials of the Islamic Republic, to the extent that the Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian and British ambassadors to provide an explanation.
