Headline inflation reached 50 percent in April

Javad Hosseinzadeh, head of the Iranian Statistical Center, announced on Wednesday, May 1, that the point-to-point inflation rate reached about 50 percent in April of this year, and food prices have increased by more than 43 percent.
Iran has one of the highest inflation rates in the world, and only a handful of countries face higher price increases than Iran.
The International Monetary Fund announced in its latest report on the world economy that the inflation rate in Iran is expected to reach 39 percent this year.
The head of Iran's Statistical Center said that all three types of annual, point-by-point, and monthly inflation "increased" in Farvardin.
According to Mr. Hosseinzadeh, monthly inflation in Farvardin reached 2.7 percent, point-to-point inflation reached 49.5 percent, and annual inflation reached 38.9 percent.
According to his statements, the point-by-point inflation rate reaching 49.5 percent "indicates that average prices have increased compared to the same month last year."
The annual inflation rate in Farvardin 1400 showed a growth of 39.9 percent compared to the same period last year.
Regarding food price inflation, Mr. Hosseinzadeh also said that a study of households' food baskets, including 164 consumer goods, shows that the prices of these items have increased by 43.5 percent.
He also stated that the growth rate of non-food goods and household services, including 311 items of goods and services, was 36.7 percent.
According to this report, the inflation rate for food items was higher than for non-food items, with this figure being 38.6 percent in urban areas and 40.6 percent in rural areas.
The website of the Statistical Center of Iran states that in the major group of "food, beverages and tobacco", the highest price increases compared to the previous month were in the group of "vegetables", the group of "red and white meat and their products", and the group of "beverages".
In the major group of "non-food goods and services", the group of "miscellaneous goods and services" (car insurance premiums), the group of "residential unit maintenance and repair services", and the group of "hotels and restaurants" had the highest price increases compared to the previous month.
The International Monetary Fund has also announced that the unemployment rate in Iran is expected to rise from 11.2 percent in 2020 to 11.7 percent in 2022.
According to reports, the economic pressure in Iran is so great that the quality of life and food of the people has changed drastically.
