Strong earthquake in Afghanistan leaves "at least 280 dead, 600 injured"

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake shook large parts of southeastern Afghanistan as well as parts of Pakistan on Wednesday morning, July 2.

According to Taliban government officials, the death toll in this incident in Afghanistan has so far been reported at around 280, but these officials have also emphasized that the number of victims is likely to increase "significantly."

Some news sources, including the Taliban-affiliated "Bakhtar" state news agency, have also announced that at least 255 people have died as a result of the earthquake in the cities of Paktika province.

Bakhtar News Agency also quoted Shabir Ahmad Usmani, the Taliban's head of information and culture in Khost, as saying that 25 people were killed and 95 others were injured as a result of last night's earthquake in the province's Spira district.

There has been no report of casualties in Pakistan yet, however, the European Mediterranean Seismological Center announced that the earthquake was felt by about 119 million people in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and India.

According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of the earthquake was 44 kilometers from the city of Khost in southeastern Afghanistan and at a depth of 51 kilometers below the surface.

Residents within a radius of 500 kilometers from the epicenter also felt its tremors.
