Making the film "The Resurrection of Christ" after 16 years

Mel Gibson announced that filming for "The Resurrection" will resume in 2026 after a 16-year hiatus.

Mel Gibson, who has the film "The Passion of the Christ" in his portfolio, was planning to make a sequel to the film titled "The Resurrection of Christ", which was postponed several times. The film was initially scheduled to begin filming in 2023, but was then postponed to 2024 and finally to 2025. However, Mel Gibson confirmed the official title of the film and announced that filming would begin in 2026. He also announced that Jim Caviezel, who played Jesus in the film "The Passion of the Christ", is set to reprise his role as Jesus.

He expressed hope that the start of filming would not be delayed, saying: "I don't have a start date to announce, I just need to start pre-production and see what happens. This film takes its time, and the key factor that has caused the postponement of "The Resurrection of Christ" is which version of the script will be used for the film."

The script, completed in 2024, focuses on the events of the three days between the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Jim Caviezel, who played Jesus in The Passion of the Christ, also announced in an interview that he will reprise his role in The Resurrection. He said that filming is likely to begin this summer at the Cinque Terre studios in Rome and that it will be released in 2026, but the exact date is not yet known.

Referring to the film The Passion of the Christ, he said about this film: "My life was almost in danger in the previous project. I suffered problems such as a dislocated shoulder, hypothermia, and even a lightning strike. After filming ended, I faced serious health problems that required two heart surgeries, and I am still recovering from the psychological trauma of the experience of the first film."

Jim, now 56, has expressed his delight at being offered the role of Jesus in Mel Gibson's "The Resurrection" and has said yes. He added that he is excited to reprise his role in the film. "There are unspeakable events that will shock the audience," Jim said, without giving details about the film. "I can't tell you how Mel Gibson is going to portray them, but I will say that the film is so good that it will be the greatest film of all time."

He also added about his feelings about playing the role of Jesus: "Playing the role of Jesus in the resurrection of Christ has a deep meaning for me and I am eagerly waiting to start filming. I am very excited for this role and I am preparing for a holy battle and for this purpose I have started praying and fasting and I plan to attend the Holy Communion every day during the filming."
