Denmark cooperates with US intelligence to spy on European leaders

The calls of several European leaders and politicians, including the German Chancellor and then-Foreign Minister, were tapped for years. The Danish intelligence agency is said to have collaborated with the US National Security Agency in this area.

Spying on European leaders and politicians by the US National Security Agency (NSA) is not a new issue. What is new is the cooperation between the Danish Intelligence Agency and the US National Security Agency in eavesdropping and spying on European leaders and politicians.

Reuters news agency, citing a Danish media outlet, "Denise Rundfunk" reported that Denmark's intelligence cooperation with the US spy agency regarding wiretapping and spying on leaders and politicians of several European countries, including Germany.

It is said that the revelation of the Danish intelligence agency's cooperation with the US National Security Agency was the result of a joint investigation by the aforementioned Danish media outlet with several German media outlets, including the newspaper "Süddeutsche" and two German radio and television broadcasters, NDR and WDR.

In Germany, the phone calls of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, then-Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and Social Democratic Party candidate Per Steinbrück in the election for the country's chancellor have been tapped by the US intelligence agency, in collaboration with the Danish intelligence agency, for several years.

Reuters continues its report by saying that the Danish government has also been aware of spying on the leaders of several European countries since at least 2015.

The Danish Foreign and Military Intelligence Agency (FEI) has provided the US National Security Agency with the ability to spy on European leaders and politicians.

It is said that at the Sandagargardan spy and listening station, located near Copenhagen, US intelligence agents spied on European leaders by exploiting an Internet exchange point.

The Danish Intelligence Agency has provided the US National Security Agency with the ability to spy by providing this Internet exchange point and the cables for transmitting Internet services and communications installed under the sea.

The Danish government, its intelligence agency, and the US National Security Agency have not yet taken a position on the publication of this report.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the current President of Germany and former Foreign Minister of the country, responded to reporters by saying that he was not aware of this matter and that he learned about American espionage through the media.
