UN High Commissioner for Human Rights: Discrimination against women has intensified in Iran

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights says in his new report on the human rights situation in Iran that discrimination against women in the country has intensified after the recent popular protests in Iran subsided.

According to the statement, which was published on Wednesday, June 22, on the website of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, street protests in Iran have decreased, but harassment of women, including for what they wear or do not wear, appears to have actually intensified.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk says Iranian women and girls face harsh legal, social and economic measures due to the implementation of discriminatory hijab laws.

Mr. Turk continued: "I call on the Iranian government to heed Iranians' calls for reform and to begin by abolishing mandatory hijab regulations."

He also requested that the Islamic Republic refrain from issuing death sentences against protesters.

Since the start of nationwide protests in Iran, which were sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini in the custody of the Ershad police, the European Union has so far sanctioned 216 individuals and 37 institutions of the Islamic Republic in response to the repression of protesters and human rights violations in Iran.

But in recent weeks, not only have arrests of women's rights defenders increased, but a new wave of executions of protesters has also begun.

The recent wave of executions in Iran has sparked widespread domestic and international reactions, and in many cases critics have called for "punitive" measures to be taken against the Islamic Republic.

In the most recent case, Saleh Mirhashemi, Majid Kazemi, and Saeed Yaqoubi were arrested in connection with the killing of two Basij members and a special forces colonel during protests on the evening of November 15, 1402 in the Khaneh Isfahan neighborhood and were executed on charges of "moharebeh" after extracting forced confessions.
