Keyvan Samimi arrested and transferred to Evin Prison

Keyvan Samimi, editor-in-chief of the publication “Iran Farda,” was transferred to Evin Prison. Mr. Samimi had previously been sentenced to three years in prison by the Tehran Revolutionary Court, and this sentence was upheld by the Tehran Provincial Court of Appeal.

The Human Rights News Agency "HRANA" reported that Keyvan Samimi, editor-in-chief of the magazine "Iran Farda" and one of the detainees on International Workers' Day in front of the parliament, was arrested on Monday, December 7, after appearing at the Evin Courthouse's sentence execution unit and transferred to Evin Prison to serve his sentence.

Keyvan Samimi was previously sentenced to three years in prison by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Iman Afshari, on charges of “gathering and colluding with the intention of acting against national security.” This sentence was upheld on appeal by Branch 36 of the Tehran Provincial Court of Appeal, presided over by Judge Ahmad Zargar.

Keyvan Samimi's arrest and transfer to Evin Prison, given his advanced age, has sparked many protests, especially in cyberspace.

Zia Nabavi, a political activist and student who was imprisoned after the 2009 elections, wrote on Twitter, “Despite his advanced age and illnesses, Keyvan Samimi went to prison to endure a three-year sentence so that the security of the bullies would be maintained.

Bahareh Hedayat, a political prisoner and women's activist, also tweeted that Keyvan Samimi had been sent to prison at the age of 71.

Keyvan Samimi's presence and participation in the International Workers' Day ceremony in 2019 was considered by the judiciary as "propaganda against the system" and "gathering and collusion against national security," and he was sentenced to three years in prison for these charges.

On June 17, 2019, he was temporarily released from prison after posting bail. In April of this year, the court sentenced him to five years in prison. Branch 36 of the Court of Appeals has upheld his three-year prison sentence.

Keyvan Samimi announced in his Telegram post at the time that the verdict was confirmed without his presence or that of his lawyer, and was based on the statements of "security interrogators."
