230 kilos of heroin "loaded from Iran" discovered at Azerbaijani customs

On Tuesday, April 14, Azerbaijan Customs announced the discovery of a 230-kilogram shipment of heroin loaded from Iran in a truck.

According to the report, which was published on the Azerbaijani customs website, the heroin shipment was hidden inside the truck's load of potatoes.

The truck entered Astara customs in the Republic of Azerbaijan from Iran and was supposed to take its cargo to Ukraine, but trained dogs managed to discover the heroin inside the potato cargo.

The report adds that the truck driver was a citizen of the Republic of Azerbaijan and has been arrested.

There are currently around 200 Iranian citizens in Azerbaijani prisons, the majority of whom have been arrested on drug trafficking charges.

Last week, Iranian Ambassador to Baku Abbas Mousavi met with 30 Iranian citizen prisoners, including 12 women, in one of Baku's prisons.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree on the occasion of Nowruz, granting amnesty to seven Iranians.
