Christian Anthony Navid takes the title of Deputy Speaker of the Parliament

In an unprecedented event, a Christian named Anthony Naveed was elected as the deputy speaker of the provincial parliament of Sindh, Pakistan.

The provincial parliament of the Sindh province of Pakistan was held under the chairmanship of Agha Siraj Durrani, and the representatives elected in the elections on February 8, 2024, took oath in this parliament. In the aforementioned ceremony, Anthony Naveed, a member of the Pakistan People's Party, was elected as the Deputy Speaker of this parliament by the representatives of the Sindh province parliament, in an unprecedented decision that is an important event.

Pakistani Christians have welcomed the decision to elect Anthony Naveed as a positive development for the betterment of Christians in the country. Experts also believe that the election of a loyal and active member of the Catholic Church in Pakistan is a step forward in increasing religious tolerance and tolerance in this Islamic country.

Pakistan is a parliamentary republic and parliamentary elections are held to determine the seats in the federal legislative assembly, called the National Assembly, and to elect four provincial assemblies. In Pakistan, each province has a governor who is appointed by the president and is ceremonially responsible to the chief minister. The chief ministers of each province are elected by the provincial parliaments and are responsible for the provincial government for a term of five years.

It is worth noting that about two percent of Pakistan’s population is Christian and is often targeted for “blasphemy” charges. According to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom in a report last year, Pakistan’s blasphemy laws encourage radical Islamists to accuse religious minorities, especially Christians, with impunity and attack those who hold different beliefs.
