The execution of Mohammad Qobadlo's death sentence and the judiciary's claims regarding his case

Mohammad Qobadlo's death sentence was carried out this morning, and the judiciary claimed that his retrial case had been rejected twice by the Supreme Court.

Yesterday evening, the news of sending Mohammad Qobadlo's sentence to the execution department was published, which led to widespread reactions among various institutions and the public. Political prisoner Narges Mohammadi called for a public protest regarding this news. Prince Reza Pahlavi also announced that Mohammad Qobadlo was deprived of a fair trial. Human rights organizations also pointed out numerous irregularities in Mohammad Qobadlo's case.

Early this morning, Tuesday, February 23, the Islamic Republic's Judiciary News Agency announced the execution of Mohammad Ghobadlo. Mohammad, 23, was one of the detainees of the nationwide protests of 1401 AH and was accused of overpowering a special unit of the police force and murdering an officer named "Farid Karampour Hasanvand."

Mohammad's mother, Masoumeh Ahmadi, released a video last year in which she revealed that her son had bipolar disorder. According to Ms. Ahmadi, Mohammad had stopped taking his medication some time before the protests.

His defense lawyer, Amir Raisian, announced yesterday that despite the Supreme Court overturning his client’s retribution verdict, his sentence has been sent to the Execution of Sentences Division for execution on Tuesday. He wrote in his client’s description of the proceedings that the death sentence was initially overturned in the Supreme Court and the case was referred to Branch 5 of the Criminal Court of Tehran to issue a new sentence after re-examination by forensic medicine. However, the case was not made available to this branch for several months, and the Supreme Court wrote in response to a request for guidance: “It is subject to the outcome of the investigation in Branch 39.”

Amir Raisian, Mohammad Qobadlo's lawyer, emphasized that since the case has not been determined in the Supreme Court, the execution of Mohammad Qobadlo's sentence has no legal authorization and is undoubtedly considered murder.

Following the announcement of the verdict, Amnesty International called on the head of Iran’s judiciary to halt the arbitrary and unlawful execution of Mohammad Ghobadlo. Amnesty International said the 23-year-old prisoner is a mentally ill young man and that the charges against him are based on confessions obtained under torture and in secret.

It should be noted that in addition to Amnesty International, Clara Bonger, a member of the German parliament and political sponsor of Mohammad Qobadlo, and Melissa Lanzman, a member of the Canadian parliament, also called for a halt to the execution of Mohammad Qobadlo last night.

Mohsen Shekari, Majid Reza Rahnavard, Mohammad Mehdi Karami, Mohammad Hosseini, Saleh Mirhashemi, Saeed Yaqoubi, and Majid Kazemi were among the other detainees of the nationwide protests whose cases were faced with many uncertainties, but they were executed by the Islamic Republic regime.
