Biden seeks to “intensify and extend” restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program

White House spokesman Joe Biden said he is seeking through diplomacy to “tighten and extend” restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program and discuss other “issues of concern.” He also said Iran must return to its commitments under the JCPOA.
New US President Joe Biden will discuss Iran's nuclear program with US allies. "The president has made it clear that he believes the United States will continue to pursue diplomacy to extend and tighten restrictions on Iran's nuclear program and to address other issues of concern," White House spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki said in her first press conference on Wednesday, January 20.
He continued: "To this end, Iran must return to its commitments in the nuclear deal." According to Psaki, Biden's recent talks with partners and allies were part of these efforts.
The nuclear agreement between the P5+1 countries and Iran was signed in 2015 to control the country's nuclear program. However, by withdrawing from the agreement in 2018, Donald Trump effectively paved the way for the Islamic Republic to advance its nuclear program.
Currently, Iran has abandoned many of its commitments under the JCPOA and is engaged in 20% uranium enrichment and the production of uranium metal, activities that were prohibited under the JCPOA.
On Wednesday, February 1, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called on the United States to return to the nuclear deal, coinciding with the inauguration of President Joe Biden.
