Iranian Human Rights Organization: 239 executions in the past six months

The Norway-based Iranian Human Rights Organization announced last week that 239 people were executed in Iran in the past six months, of which only 45 were reported in official Iranian media. About half of those executed were convicted of drug trafficking.

The death penalty for drug offenders in Iran also has critics, and a bill to change this penalty was recently prepared in parliament, which is currently under review. For this reason, the parliament's judicial commission has asked the judiciary to suspend the execution of death sentences for drug offenders until the bill is finalized and approved.

According to Amnesty International, at least 567 people were executed in Iran last year, and Iran still has the highest number of executions in the world after China.
