Azerbaijani activist Sahand Maali sentenced to one year in prison in new case

The imprisoned Azerbaijani (Turkish) activist "Sahand Maali" was sentenced to prison terms and a fine by the Sarab Revolutionary Court in a new case.

According to the Campaign for the Defense of Political and Civil Prisoners, civil activist "Sahand Ma'ali", who was arrested on Thursday, May 1, by enforcement officers, subjected to physical violence and insults at her workplace in Sarab and transferred to prison, has been sentenced to one year in prison and a fine in a new case by the Sarab Revolutionary Court on charges of "conflicting and assaulting officers".

“The judge who issued this ruling found the plaintiffs’ perjury sufficient to issue a verdict,” an informed source told the campaign.

Previously, Sahand Moali was sentenced to ten months in prison by the Sarab City General and Revolutionary Court on charges of "propaganda against the system by distributing leaflets of ethnic groups," a sentence that was confirmed by Branch Three of the East Azerbaijan Province Court of Appeal, presided over by Judge Bahloul Alizadeh.

Mr. Maali was arrested on January 1, 2018, along with three other civil society activists from Sarab, namely Heydar Mazini, Mohammad Ranjbari, and Vahid Noormohammadi, on the same charge of propaganda against the regime through the distribution of leaflets. Three days later, he was temporarily released on bail of 300 million Tomans until the completion of the trial.

According to a report by Amnesty International, in 2018, more than seven thousand people, including participants in demonstrations, students, journalists, women's rights activists, environmental activists, labor activists, and ethnic and religious minority rights activists, were arrested in Iran, and hundreds were sentenced to prison.
