Alireza Kafaei sentenced to prison

Alireza Kafaei, a retired teacher and political activist, was sentenced to six months in prison by the Gachsaran Revolutionary Court. The sentence has been suspended for one year. The court hearing on Mr. Kafaei's charges was held on September 10.

According to HRANA news agency, citing Aftonews, Alireza Kafaei, a retired teacher and political activist, was sentenced to six months in prison by the Revolutionary Court of Gachsaran.

According to the report, the sentence has been suspended for one year due to his advanced age.

This political activist says regarding the alleged charge: "The title of the charge explicitly states insulting the leader, while the text of the court's verdict specifically states "criticism of the leader," and Article 514 of the Islamic Penal Code, which the court judge cited, only states "insulting the leader" as the punishment."

On September 19, the head of the Islamic Teachers Association of Gachsaran was summoned to the city's Revolutionary Court through an electronic notification by Mohammad Javad Karimi Nejadian, the director of the criminal court office of this city.

Mr. Kafaei's court hearing was held on September 10.

Alireza Kafaei has a history of arrests and convictions. On February 29, 2019, following a complaint from the Guardian Council’s Legal Affairs and Laws Office, Mr. Kafaei was arrested at his workplace by the IRGC Intelligence Service and ultimately sentenced by the Second Branch of the Criminal Court of Yasuj City to pay a fine of 20 million rials on the charge of “spreading lies with the intention of disturbing public opinion” pursuant to Article 698 of the Islamic Penal Code.

Alireza Kafaei is a retired teacher and political and cultural activist. Mr. Kafaei is the head of the Islamic Teachers Association of Gachsaran, a member of the Islamic Teachers Association of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer Ahmad Provinces, and the secretary of the Gachsaran Reformist Council. He served as the deputy head of Hassan Rouhani's campaign headquarters in Gachsaran during the 2017 presidential election.
