Brian Hook
After Mike Pompeo, Brian Hook answered reporters' questions at the meeting and, in response to a question about the Leader of the Islamic Republic's opposition to negotiating with the United States, which he recently raised, said that it is up to the Iranian regime to change its behavior. We have repeatedly announced our readiness for dialogue.
Mr. Hook emphasized that we must first see Iran's seriousness for change before we can talk.
He then responded to a reporter who asked whether Iran must first show seriousness or change its behavior in order to negotiate, saying that the Foreign Minister had previously presented 12 conditions that Iran must meet in order to reach a new agreement.
America's withdrawal from the JCPOA and Pompeo's 12 conditions
US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly said that Iran is violating the spirit of the 2015 nuclear deal between world powers and Tehran by developing its ballistic missile program and continuing its previous policies in the Middle East, signed an executive order on May 8th, formally withdrawing Washington from the agreement.
Following Washington's withdrawal from the nuclear deal between world powers and Tehran three years ago, US sanctions against Iran, which were lifted after the agreement was implemented in the winter of that year, will be reimposed in two phases; the first phase of sanctions went into effect on August 6, and the second phase will be implemented in mid-November.
President Trump's administration has repeatedly emphasized that its goal is to change Iran's behavior and that it is willing to negotiate with Tehran to reach a better and fairer agreement if it sees such a change. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo presented the Islamic Republic with 12 conditions to this end in early June.
The US President had previously emphasized in a message on Twitter, warning that "anyone who does business with Iran will not do business with the United States," and that "I want world peace, and nothing less!"
Last week, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo once again criticized the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, describing its behavior as opposed to "world peace" and a promoter of terrorism, and called on US allies to support Washington's efforts to counter the Iranian leadership's access to financial resources.
Mr. Pompeo had previously said on August 1, in front of a group of Iranian-Americans at the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley, California, that he had a message for the people of Iran, and that was that the United States of America hears your voice, the United States supports you, and is with you.
