The latest statistics from the Statistical Center of Iran address the issue of unemployment. Based on these statistics, the unemployment rate of the economically active population of Iran was 11.9 percent in the fall of 2017. Nationwide, more women are unemployed than men.

The Statistical Center of Iran has announced that the country's economically active population is about 26.5 million people, or 40.1 percent of the total population. The number of men in the economically active population is four times that of women. About 64 percent of the country's economically active population is men and about 16 percent of this population is women.

The center also announced that in the major sectors of economic activity, the services sector accounts for the largest share of employment at 50.1 percent, followed by the industry (32.6 percent) and agriculture (17.2 percent).

The Statistical Center of Iran published the results of the country's unemployment survey in the fall of 2017. According to the results of the Statistical Center of Iran's survey in the fall of this year, 11.9 percent of the country's economically active population, which comprises the population aged 10 and over, is unemployed (more than 3 million people). Thus, about 10 percent of men (more than 2 million people) and about 19 percent of women (less than one million people) of the country's economically active population are unemployed.

Unemployment in urban areas of the country is 13.2 percent higher than in rural areas at 8.1 percent. The results of this statistic show that the unemployment rate in the fall of 2017 decreased by 0.4 percent compared to the same period last year (fall 2016).

According to the Statistics Center of Iran, unemployment rates vary across different provinces in Iran, with Kermanshah having the highest unemployment rate at 25.6 percent. Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari provinces are next with 21.1 percent, West Azerbaijan (15 percent), Khuzestan (14.6 percent), and Yazd (13.9 percent), respectively.

Unemployment among Iranian youth

The Statistical Center of Iran considers the minimum age of the economically active population in the country to be 10 years old and includes all people aged 10 and over who can "participate in the production of goods and services" as part of the economically active population.

In this way, many children in Iran are deprived of going to school and experiencing childhood, and their mental and physical health is threatened by various types of work. In many countries and international organizations, child labor is considered an exploitative activity.

The unemployment rate among Iranian youth is very high. The Statistical Center of Iran has reported an unemployment rate of 28.4 percent among youth aged 15 to 24, which includes 24.5 percent of men and 42.3 percent of young women. This youth unemployment rate was also higher in urban areas than in rural areas.
