Morgan Ortagus: The Islamic Republic will not spend money from the lifting of sanctions on the Iranian people

On Thursday, March 28, the US State Department spokesperson, referring to an article in an American newspaper about the lack of need to ease sanctions on Iran to combat the new coronavirus in the country, said: "The Islamic Republic will not spend the money from the lifting of sanctions on the people."

Responding to yesterday's Wall Street Journal editorial saying that despite the COVID-19 outbreak, it is not time to ease sanctions on Tehran, Morgan Ortagus noted that the regime wants cash to fund its malign activities, not to provide aid to the Iranian people.

The article says that Iranian officials have called for sanctions to be lifted to provide medical services to the people, while Tehran's proxies continue their attacks on American forces, and President Trump must resist these calls.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also wrote on Twitter on Wednesday, April 26: "Rather than looking for excuses to blame the United States for his government's massive mismanagement of the Wuhan virus outbreak in Iran, Hassan Rouhani could better serve the Iranian people by saying "yes" to our offer to provide humanitarian assistance."
