10,000 new graves prepared in Tehran for coronavirus victims

The deputy head of urban services at Tehran Municipality announced that a new section has been prepared in Behesht Zahra for those who died of coronavirus, and so far, 10,000 new graves have been dug in this section.

According to IRNA, Mojtaba Yazdani said at a Tehran City Council meeting on Sunday, April 14, that several new cold storage facilities and two 12-meter refrigerated containers have been added to Behesht Zahra's equipment.

He did not announce how many people who died from the coronavirus have been buried in Tehran so far. The Islamic Republic authorities have not announced the number of people who died from the coronavirus in Tehran and other cities in Iran separately.

The prediction of 10,000 graves for possible victims of the coronavirus in Behesht Zahra in Tehran has been made, while according to statistics announced by the Ministry of Health, 4,474 people have died in all of Iran.

However, statistics collected by Radio Farda from scattered statements by local officials and Ministry of Health sources show that about 10,000 people have lost their lives in 31 provinces of Iran so far.

Meanwhile, a number of members of parliament are accusing the government of concealing the actual number of deaths and infections from the coronavirus.

On the other hand, Iranian Ministry of Health officials have repeatedly expressed concern in recent days about the increase in urban traffic.

A report from the ministry also states that if social distancing is reduced, the death toll will increase to 30,000 by mid-May.

Also on Sunday, Hassan Khalilabadi, a member of Tehran City Council, said that some of the coronavirus victims were buried in cemeteries in the city of Rey, including Shah Abdul Azim and Ibn Babawayh, which are in a residential area.

Mr. Khalilabadi said that it would be better to bury the bodies of the victims of Corona in Behesht Zahra.

He also announced that the Kahrizak area is one of the red spots of the coronavirus outbreak in Tehran, and that the residents of this area are more than the employees of Behesht Zahra and the Rey Waste Disposal Center.

In some cities in Iran, special plots have been created for the burial of those who died from coronavirus, and in some cities they are buried with other deceased people.

Meanwhile, the director of environmental health at the Isfahan Health Center said that coronavirus victims will not be buried in a separate plot, but all health instructions for their burial will be followed.

Mehdi Mirjahanian announced that the bodies of these people were buried two meters deep in the ground and that lime was not used in the grave.

In some cities in Iran, however, lime is poured on the graves of Corona victims.

On March 12, the Washington Post published images of "unusually large" trenches being dug in Qom's Behesht Masoumeh Cemetery to bury coronavirus victims, and wrote that the size of these mass graves is so large that they can be seen from space.
