Iranian translator and journalist Nader Fatorechi sentenced to prison and fine

Iranian translator and journalist Nader Fatorechi was sentenced to one year in prison and a fine of one million rials by the Tehran Provincial Criminal Court.

On Wednesday, August 13, Nader Fatorechi announced on his Twitter page that he had been sentenced by Branch 1040 of Tehran's Second Criminal Court to pay a fine of one million rials for the charge of "insult" and to one year in prison for the charge of "defamation." This sentence was suspended for two years due to his lack of a criminal record.

Mr. Fatorechi's court hearing was held on August 25, and the verdict was delivered to him today. According to the published verdict, the Iranian journalist and writer has been acquitted of the charge of "spreading lies in cyberspace" in this case.

According to the available information, this Iranian journalist was arrested on August 19, 2018, by the Third Branch of the 31st District Prosecutor's Office of Tehran, following a complaint filed by Mohammad Emami, accused of embezzlement of the Farhangian Reserve Fund, and was released from Greater Tehran Prison on bail a day later.

Mohammad Emami, the investor of the series Shahrzad, had sued Nader Fatorechi for slander, defamation, and disturbing public opinion.

Nader Fatorechi had previously referred to Mohammad Emami's accusations in the case of embezzlement from the Farhangian Reserve Fund and questioned the method of financing the series Shahrzad. By launching the "No to Shahrzad Series" campaign, he had linked the series' funding to the embezzlement of 1.3 trillion tomans from the Farhangian Reserve Fund.
