Nazanin Zaghari went on a hunger strike on her daughter's fifth birthday.
The husband of British-Iranian prisoner Nazanin Zaghari has announced that her husband has begun another hunger strike on the anniversary of their daughter's birth.
France 24 reported on Saturday, June 15, that Richard Radcliffe, the husband of British-Iranian citizen Nazanin Zaghari, announced that his wife has begun a hunger strike for the second time since Saturday. Nazanin Zaghari's hunger strike coincides with the 5th birthday of her daughter, Gabriella.
Mr. Redcliffe announced that Nazanin Zaghari “has notified the Iranian judiciary of her renewed hunger strike in protest of her unjust imprisonment.”
Previously, imprisoned civil activists Nazanin Zaghari and Narges Mohammadi had gone on a hunger strike in January 2018 to protest the lack of medical care provided by prison officials.
On April 6, 2016, while she was planning to return to London with her two-year-old daughter after visiting family in Iran, Nazanin Zaghari was arrested at Tehran International Airport and later sentenced to five years in prison on security charges.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guards accused Ms. Zaghari of teaching journalism to media outlets abroad, but she denied the accusations, and the Thomson Reuters Foundation officially stated that she was a simple employee in the foundation's administrative department.
Recently, Iranian judicial authorities have spoken of another "open case" for Ms. Zaghari, which they say will be handled after "the previous case is determined and resolved."
Western analysts say the Islamic Republic uses dual nationals as hostages to extract money and privileges from Western governments.
In his latest report, published about 9 months ago, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Iran expressed concern about the imprisonment of dual nationals in Iran, saying that these arrests are a cause for deep concern and a clear example of the failure to follow legal procedures in Iran.
