Vida Movahed's lawyer: My client has been pardoned but will not be released

According to Vida Movahed's lawyer, she was sentenced to one year in prison, but was later pardoned. However, the authorities in the city of Rey are not taking any action to enforce the sentence. She is the first woman to protest against the mandatory hijab and the so-called Girls of Revolution Street movement.

According to Payam Derfashan, Vida Movahed's lawyer was sentenced to one year in prison on charges of "encouraging people to corruption and prostitution by revealing their hijabs," but was later pardoned by the Leader of the Islamic Republic. Ms. Movahed is the first woman to remove her headscarf in Tehran's Revolution Square in protest against the mandatory hijab.

Ms. Movahed's lawyer told IRNA that she herself had committed in a letter not to repeat this act and had requested conditional release. For this reason, the court judge, in order to expedite the process of her release, has personally ordered that the case be sent to the execution and prison very quickly to follow the legal procedure.

Payam Afshar said that the reason for his client's request for conditional release is that he has a two-year-old child and is concerned about the negative consequences for his child. However, the authorities of Shahr-e-Rey Prison have not investigated the case and no request has been sent from the prison to enforce the sentence.

In February 2017, Vida Movahed took off her white headscarf and hung it on a pole like a flag on a platform at the intersection of Enghelab and Vesal streets in Tehran to protest against the mandatory hijab. This was the beginning of a movement that became known as the Girls of Enghelab Street, and other women followed suit.
