An earthquake shook Kerman province early Friday. The epicenter of the earthquake was declared to be in the “Hajdak” region, a part of Ravar County, Kerman Province. The tremors caused by this 6.1-magnitude earthquake were also felt in the cities of Sirjan and Kerman.
On Friday morning, December 1, at 6:02 a.m., a 6.1-magnitude earthquake shook parts of Kerman Province. According to the latest news about the earthquake in Kerman Province, a number of residents of the province have been injured so far. No reports of casualties from the earthquake have been released as of the time of publication of this report.
ISNA news agency, publishing a moment-by-moment report on the earthquake in Kerman province, has announced the number of injured at 38. According to Iranian news agencies, at least 30 more aftershocks occurred from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM Iranian time.
According to these reports, a number of houses and buildings in Ravar city and the surrounding rural areas were destroyed by the earthquake.
In response to the earthquake in Kerman province, the Iranian Red Crescent has dispatched assessment teams and sniffer dogs to the earthquake-stricken areas. It is said that preparations have been made for emergency housing for the people of the region, and officials have dispatched helicopters to the earthquake-stricken areas to assess the severity of the damage.
Earthquake prediction
The Kerman province earthquake occurred 18 days after the Kermanshah earthquake. After the Kermanshah earthquake, the geomechanics department of the German Geological Research Center, located in Potsdam, predicted the possibility of other earthquakes in the surrounding areas of Kermanshah province.
After the Kermanshah earthquake, the German news agency assessed in its report the possibility of aftershocks in the days and even weeks following it. It was even predicted that the possible aftershocks after the Kermanshah earthquake would be around 6 on the Richter scale.
Professor Marco Bonhoff, head of the geomechanics department at the German Geological Research Center, assessed the probability of severe earthquakes in the surrounding areas of Kermanshah province as very high. He believes that a severe earthquake occurs in the Zagros Mountains region once every 100 or 150 years.
