German police arrest 17-year-old "young jihadist"

Police in Brandenburg, Germany, have arrested a 17-year-old Syrian man who they say was planning to join jihadist groups and plan a suicide attack in Berlin, the German capital.

Karl-Heinz Schröter, the Interior Minister of the state of Brandenburg, announced (May 30) that a 17-year-old Syrian youth who was planning to carry out a suicide attack in Berlin had been arrested.

Schroeter also said that information about the teenage suspect had been obtained from other German states.

Security agencies received information that the young Syrian man had joined a WhatsApp group and said goodbye to his mother. He informed her that he was planning to go to jihad.

Police in Potsdam say the origin of the young man, who identified himself as Syrian, is not entirely clear. The man arrested entered Germany illegally in 2015 as an unaccompanied minor.

The refugee has been living in a shelter for unaccompanied minors in Uckermark, Germany, since 2016.

German authorities have not yet released details about the young man's possible suicide attack, and it is still unclear how he intended to carry out his plan.
