Trump's Nowruz message: America stands with the Iranian people and their aspirations
In a message released on Monday to mark the beginning of the solar new year, US President Donald Trump wished a "beautiful and blessed Nowruz" to all those celebrating the arrival of spring.
In this message, the US President emphasized that the United States stands with the Iranian people and their aspirations for connection to the larger world and for a responsible and accountable government.
Donald Trump began the message by saying, “The history of Nowruz is rooted in Iran, where a proud nation has overcome great challenges for thousands of years, through the strength of its culture and the resilience of its people. Today, the people of Iran face another challenge: rulers who serve themselves rather than serve them.”
The US President has stated: "Twenty-five centuries ago, Darius the Great asked God to protect Iran from three dangers: hostile armies, drought, and lies. Today, the Iranian regime's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps represents all three."
He continued: “First, the IRGC is not Iranian in name or in practice. It is a hostile force that oppresses and robs the Iranian people to support terrorism across the border. Since 2012, the IRGC has spent $16 billion of Iran’s wealth to aid the Assad regime and support terrorists in Syria, Iraq, and Yemen. At the same time, the average Iranian family is 15 percent poorer than it was ten years ago, and nearly 30 percent of Iranian youth are unemployed. Ordinary Iranians are economically squeezed, and celebrations like Nowruz are difficult for them to celebrate.”
Donald Trump added: "Second, the IRGC's corruption and mismanagement have exacerbated the effects of the ongoing drought and created an environmental crisis. The reckless construction of dams by its companies, such as the Khatam al-Anbiya [camp], has dried up rivers and lakes and helped create unprecedented dust storms that threaten the jobs and lives of Iranians."
The US President added: “Third, deception has become official government policy. The Revolutionary Guard uses propaganda and censorship to hide the truth that the Iranian regime is plundering Iran’s wealth and mistreating its people. To hide the truth, Iran’s rulers suppress their citizens’ rights to freedom of assembly, access to information, and equal opportunity.”
Donald Trump says the Iranian people are fighting to reclaim their rights despite repression.
He added: "They are waiting for a spring of hope, and the United States stands with the Iranian people and their aspirations to connect with the larger world and have a responsible and accountable government that truly serves the country's interests."
Donald Trump has stated: "For this reason, the US Treasury Department is issuing a directive this week that reaffirms America's support for the free flow of information to the citizens of Iran. We also commit to continuing to hold the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Iranian regime accountable for cyberattacks abroad and for suppressing Iranian citizens who protest against their own government's repression in Iran."
At the end of this message, the US President emphasized: "On behalf of the American people, may light overcome darkness in the new year, and may the people of Iran soon enjoy a time of peace, prosperity, and happiness."
