UNICEF launches 'major operation' to distribute 2 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccine in developing countries

The United Nations International Children's Fund, UNICEF, announced on Monday, December 23, that it plans to launch a massive operation next year to distribute 2 billion anti-coronavirus vaccines and 1 billion syringes in 92 developing countries.

This unprecedented effort involves coordinating thousands of large refrigerated shipments to transport and store vaccines at extremely low temperatures, making UNICEF an expert in vaccine supply chain management.

To succeed in distributing the vaccine on such a large scale, UNICEF says it is working with hundreds of airlines, shipping and rail companies and logistics partners “to deliver the largest and fastest delivery of the medicine.”

During a virtual meeting of the Group of 20 members on Saturday and Sunday, leaders of the world's largest economies pledged to "spare no effort" to distribute the Covid-19 vaccine equitably to all people in vulnerable countries.
