"One dead, four injured" after magnitude 6 earthquake in Khorasan Razavi

An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale shook the city of Mashhad and several other cities in Khorasan Razavi Province on the morning of Wednesday, April 6.

The Iranian Students' News Agency, ISNA, quoted an official in the Red Crescent as reporting "one death and four injuries" as a result of the earthquake.

An official report on possible damage from the earthquake has not yet been released, but reports indicate that the telephone network has been disrupted in some areas near the epicenter.

In this regard, the Iranian Broadcasting Agency has reported that telephone lines in the city of Mashhad have also been cut off following the earthquake.

The news website Khabar Online also reported that this earthquake and its "severe" aftershocks have caused panic and fear among the people of Mashhad, causing them to flee into the streets.

There is still no official information about injuries or possible casualties from this earthquake.

According to the official Islamic Republic News Agency, IRNA, the earthquake occurred at a depth of ten kilometers and one hundred kilometers south of the city of Mashhad, the provincial capital.

The news agency reported that the epicenter of Wednesday's earthquake was the city of Sefidsang, near Fariman.

Mizan News Agency, citing the deputy head of relief and rescue operations for the Red Crescent Organization, reported the "60 to 100 percent" destruction of several residential buildings located at the epicenter of the earthquake in Khorasan Razavi.

Reuters news agency, citing the United States Geological Survey, said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 33 kilometers.

The earthquake occurred at 10:40 a.m. on Wednesday.

According to the Iranian Seismological Center, following this severe earthquake, several aftershocks with a magnitude of 3 to 4.7 on the Richter scale have also shaken the city of Sefidsang.
