Fresh Explosions in Southern Iran; Continuation of US Attacks on Bushehr, Bandar Abbas, and Khuzestan

Concurrent with escalating military tensions between the Islamic Republic and the United States, Iran’s official media reported fresh explosions at several locations in the country’s south, including Bandar Abbas, Bushehr, Abadan, and Mahshahr. Local authorities have stated that no reports of civilian casualties have been released so far, but these attacks occurred just hours after the conclusion of a new round of US military operations against Iranian military targets.

Iran’s state media reported on Tuesday, July 23 (July 14 in the Gregorian calendar), that around 1 p.m. local time, several explosions were heard in Hormozgan, Bushehr, and Khuzestan provinces. The Hormozgan provincial governor’s office confirmed impacts from several projectiles west of Bandar Abbas and stated that based on preliminary assessments, no damage to residential or commercial infrastructure or civilian casualties have been reported.

In Bushehr province, the political and security deputy of the provincial governor announced that four locations in the city were hit by projectiles. The governor of Bushehr said these attacks caused no casualties and that damage assessments are still ongoing. Meanwhile, domestic media reported hearing several explosions in the city of Choghadak near Bushehr.

In Khuzestan, provincial security authorities also announced that one location in Abadan and an area near Mahshahr were targeted in the attacks. According to the security and police deputy of Khuzestan’s provincial governor, two severe explosions occurred in the attack on Mahshahr, but as of the time this report was published, further details about the targets or extent of damage had not been released.

These attacks occurred as US Central Command (CENTCOM) had announced hours earlier the conclusion of a five-hour operation against military targets of the Islamic Republic. CENTCOM stated that in this operation, facilities related to Iran’s coastal defense systems, missile systems, drone systems, and naval capabilities in areas including Bandar Abbas, Bushehr, Jask, Konarak, Chabahar, and Abu Musa were targeted; an operation that according to the command was aimed at reducing Iran’s capability to attack commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

In response, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps issued a statement announcing it had targeted an American air base on Jordanian soil with ballistic missiles. The statement said this attack was in response to what the Guards described as “using this base to attack Minab school.” Jordan also announced it had intercepted and destroyed several missiles that had entered its airspace.

The latest round of attacks and counterattacks signals a continuation of escalating direct confrontation between Iran and the United States in the region; a situation that, in addition to increased security concerns, carries broad economic and energy consequences and has driven up global oil prices and raised concerns about the security of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
