UNICEF Launches ‘Massive Operation’ to Distribute 2 Billion COVID-19 Vaccines in Developing Countries

The United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, announced on Monday, December 3rd, that it plans to distribute and deliver 2 billion COVID-19 vaccines and 1 billion syringes to 92 developing countries next year by launching a massive operation.

This unprecedented initiative involves coordinating thousands of shipments of refrigeration and freezer units to transport and store vaccines at extremely low temperatures, positioning UNICEF as a specialized force in managing vaccine supply chains.

UNICEF says that to succeed in vaccine distribution at such a large scale, it is collaborating with hundreds of airlines, shipping companies, railways, and logistics partners “to carry out the largest and fastest drug delivery operation.”

On Saturday and Sunday during a virtual meeting of the G20 members, leaders of the world’s largest economies pledged to “spare no effort” in ensuring fair distribution of COVID-19 vaccines for all people in vulnerable countries.
