Tehran's air pollution went beyond red and became "purple"

On Sunday, January 11, Tehran Municipality announced the intensification of Tehran's air pollution situation, announcing that the air quality index reached about 175.

According to Tehran Municipality, air pollution has turned from red to purple in some parts of the capital tonight.

In recent weeks, many warnings have been issued about air pollution in Iranian metropolises, especially the "doubling of sulfur dioxide levels" due to the use of diesel fuel as fuel in power plants.

Amidst the confirmation and denial of Iranian government officials regarding the use of diesel fuel in power plants, the Islamic Republic's Minister of Oil finally confirmed the issue and said that due to sanctions and the lack of diesel fuel exports, there is no choice but to burn this highly polluting fuel within the country.

Fars News Agency writes that the Sohanek area of Tehran and Azgol are among the "purple" areas in terms of air pollution, with the air quality index reported to be higher than 202.

According to official statistics, Tehran has only had 15 days of clean air this year.
