Hassan Rouhani expresses willingness to hold referendum in Iran

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, in a message posted on the social network Twitter, expressed his desire to hold a referendum on important issues in the country.

Hassan Rouhani wrote on Twitter: "I would like, for once, to ask the people to implement a very important issue that is important to everyone, based on one of the principles of the constitution."

Previously, the Iranian President had said in his speech at the first Iranian Economic Conference, referring to Article 59 of the country's constitution, which concerns referendums: "I am very keen to create conditions so that once and for all, an important economic, political, social, and cultural issue can be put to the public vote and referendum in the form of a legal article or program, and I am keen to ask the people for a vote once and for all on the implementation of a very important issue that is important to everyone. Of course, the parliament has its own important and respected place, but it would be good if this were done once a year or at least once every few years, but now 36 years have passed and this law has not been implemented."

This is despite the fact that the referendum issue was one of the issues that reformists raised during their rule in Iran, but they always faced strong opposition from the fundamentalist faction and those close to Ali Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
