Canadian police investigate kidnapping of Iranian girl by "fake cops"

Ontario police in Canada have launched an "extensive investigation" into the fate of an Iranian girl who was kidnapped by "fake police" in the city.

The Guardian newspaper reported on Thursday, April 15, that three men who identified themselves as police officers visited the home of Elnaz Hajtamieri, a 37-year-old Iranian-born woman, on January 12 and took her away "on foot through the snow," and no information has yet been received about her fate.

The report adds that "fake police officers" forced Ms. Hajtameiri into a Lexus SUV.

Three months after the incident, Ontario police say that police officers had never visited the Iranian's home.

Ontario Police Criminal Investigator Martin Graham expressed surprise at the incident and said: "I have never encountered a case like this before. Given that no ransom has been demanded so far, it is unclear what the motive for the kidnapping was. The Lexus in which Ms. Haj Tamiri was abducted has not yet been found, and the owner of the car is not even known."

He said he very much hopes that Ms. Haj Tamiri is alive.

Toronto police also said they are in contact with the Iranian-Canadian community to perhaps get some clues about this incident.

The report says that two weeks before Ms. Haj Tamiri was kidnapped, she was beaten by unknown individuals, requiring "forty stitches" to her head, and that the attackers were likely involved in her kidnapping.
