Trump urges Lavrov to rein in Syria and Iran

US President Donald Trump urged the Russian foreign minister to rein in the Syrian government and its ally Iran during his meeting. Lavrov is visiting the US for the first time since Trump took office.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has visited the United States for the first time under Trump's presidency. He met with Trump at the White House on Wednesday, May 10.
During the meeting, Donald Trump called on Russia to rein in the government of Bashar al-Assad and its ally Iran. According to the White House, the US president recalled the need for cooperation between the two countries to resolve the Syrian crisis and stressed that Russia must “restrain the regime of Bashar al-Assad, its ally Iran, and Iranian proxies.”
Sergey Lavrov had not visited the United States in nearly four years. His main goal of this trip is to gain American support for Russia's plan to create a safe zone in Syria.
