Human Rights Watch reacts to the appointment of Ebrahim Raisi as one of the people responsible for executions in the 1960s

In response to the appointment of Ebrahim Raisi as head of the Judiciary of the Islamic Republic, Human Rights Watch noted his presence on the judicial panel for the mass executions of political prisoners in 1988, and considered it a reflection of the deteriorating human rights situation in Iran.

“It is disturbing and frankly frightening that Ebrahim Raisi will oversee justice and accountability in Iran,” Sarah Wilson, Middle East director at Human Rights Watch, said in a statement published on the organization’s website on Thursday, March 6. “Raisi should be tried for serious crimes, not investigated,” she added.

The statement also refers to an audio recording of Ayatollah Montazeri's speech to members of the judicial executions board, known as the "Death Board," in which Mr. Montazeri told Mr. Raisi and three other members that history would remember them as "criminals."
