The president of the University of Tehran was dismissed one day after Kasra Nouri's release was requested.
Mahmoud Nili Ahmadabadi, the president of the University of Tehran, was dismissed from his post on Tuesday, September 20, by order of the Minister of Science, Research and Technology. Just a day earlier, Mr. Nili Ahmadabadi had called for the release of Kasra Nouri, a student at the University of Tehran.
Domestic media have published the text of the decree of Mohammad Ali Zolfigol, Minister of Science, Research and Technology, appointing Mohammad Moghimi as the rector of the University of Tehran.
Mr. Moghimi is a professor of public administration at the University of Tehran. His career includes the Deputy of Education and Planning of the Court of Accounts, the Chairman of the Board of Supervision and Evaluation of Higher Education in Qom Province, and the Chairman of the Farabi Campus of the University of Tehran.
The media report says that Zolfigol, in a separate letter, thanked Mahmoud Nili Ahmadabadi for his efforts during his tenure as the president of Tehran University. Mr. Niliabadi had held this position since June 2014.
On Monday, the dismissed president of the University of Tehran wrote a letter to Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, head of the Judiciary, requesting a pardon or conditional release for Kasra Nouri.
Nili Ahmadabadi stated in an interview that same day that, given that Mr. Nouri has served half of his prison term and the law allows his release based on these conditions, the University of Tehran has put a request for his release on the agenda, at the request of the imprisoned student's family.
Kasra Nouri, a Gonabadi dervish and one of the administrators of the website "Majzooban Noor" (Enchanted by Light), was arrested during the Golestan Haftam incident on March 1, 2017, along with hundreds of other dervishes, and was sentenced by the Tehran Revolutionary Court to 12 years in prison, 74 lashes, and 2 years of exile to the city of "Thaleh Babajani" and social deprivation.
